This past weekend, the Dining Diva decided to play in a volleyball tournament in Wenatchee. After a full day of work, we packed up and wanted to get on the road quickly so we could get over the pass and to Wenatchee before it got a too late. Plus, I figured it was a chance for us to try something new.
We set out on the same route that we take when we go skiing in the winter…making our way to Highway 2. We made our way through Monroe, looking at the options, but deciding nothing appealed. We wanted to get something on the go, and weren’t willing to subject ourselves to the fast food regulars. As we kept going and I was starting to get hungry, I was wondering if we were going to find anything. Then off to the left, out of the corner of my eye I saw a red “shack” with a sign that said Alpen Drive-In. I went by so quickly that I had to actually go to the next turn, make a U-turn and head back.
We pulled around to the order window and checked out the classic burger joint menu with a Northwest twist. There were burgers and shakes and fries to go along with fish and chips. We decided to go classic with the Dining Diva getting a cheeseburger and chocolate shake, and me getting an Alpen burger with fries and a strawberry shake. We pulled around and waited to hear our name called for our order. I got it from the window, and we set off down the road to Wenatchee.
The burger was a pretty good burger. It had two patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato and a special sauce. It was a little messy which is what you want from a burger, but the mess was coming a little more from the sauce than from the burger itself. And there was a little too much lettuce. But otherwise enjoyable. And the fries were crinkle-cut and cooked nicely. They were crispy and salty on the outside and moist on the inside. A good fry for sure. For me though, the star was the strawberry shake. There were chunks of strawberry and it was just nice and creamy and delicious! One of the better shakes that I’ve had.
Overall, I thought it made for a pretty good dinner on our way out to Wenatchee. It wasn’t as good as say a Lunchbox Laboratory or a Red Mill, but was exponentially better than anything that would have been fast food. If you are heading out to Wenatchee or Steven’s Pass or Leavenworth and needing a burger fix, do yourself a favor and skip the fast food joints in Monroe and stop at Alpen Drive-In. You’ll feel much better about that choice.
