One morning after making a long walk into Gastown for breakfast only to find everything closed for BC Day, I found myself getting up at the same time, and heading back out on the same route. This time however, the city was awake and moving. Places were pen. And breakfast was to be had. My original destination had been Bambo Cafe, and that’s where I pointed myself again. As I approached, I was a little concerned that it was still closed, but I finally saw the neon sign and the open door welcoming me in to the little French cafe.
It was a small place, with just a handful of tables inside, and a couple more outside. The walls were a warm red with a few pictures and other memorabilia adorning them. A chalkboard menu hung above the counter crowded with all kinds of impulse purchase items. It had the air of a place where you could get a nice pastry and a good cup of coffee, then kick back and read the paper and get the morning off to a good start. Interestingly though, they also had a full menu board of omelettes which was actually got me to seek them out in the first place.
I could definitely tell it was early in the morning as I scanned the menu and tried to order the Spinach omelette with peppers as an egg white omelette. The kind French Canadian gentleman behind the counter gave me a puzzled look until he realized I was trying to order the Spanish omelette. Sheesh, frickin’ Americans can’t read. Once we got that all sorted out, I was good to go. I took my coffee and pulled up a seat by the window where I could listen to the rhythmic chopping and sizzling while reading The Daily and sipping coffee.
All of the hard work definitely paid off in the omelette. You could just tell that it was fresh made as the peppers had a nice vibrant flavor and crunch, the onions just slightly browned, and the egg whites even had that little brown on them just like mine at home. The only down side was that I hadn’t noticed that there was a bit of mozzarella in it, and I had to pick a bunch of it out…being all proper P90X and all. A second cup of coffee and a little reading later, I was ready to get my day started. It was definitely a good morning, one of those things that I wish I could do more often, and could definitely get used to.
