Deck on Willoughby Brewing Company

Being the lone stragglers after having a few brews  as a final send off from Philips, my co-worker Charles and I decided that we needed to seek out dinner.  Originally we were thinking Fisher’s Tavern for a burger, but found it to be closed.  With burgers on the mind, and wanting to try something new, we came up with the Willoughby Brewing Company.

It took us about 20 minutes to navigate the backroads from Highland Heights up to the quaint little downtown of Willoughby and walk up to the Brewing Company.  I wanted to start with the Hop Jam Black IPA, sticking with my hoppy beer kick that I’ve been on lately.  Unfortunately I was informed that they were out, and had to settle for the Cosmic IPA.

Burgers were definitely on the agenda, but we wanted to start out with something a little different; something like buffalo chicken egg rolls because that’s what you expect at a brewing company.  I was expecting breaded, fried chicken in a buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing.  I wasn’t even close.  These crispy crunchy little pockets of delicious were filled with juicy and flavorful grilled chicken (yes, grilled and not fried!) zucchini, pepperoni and cheese.  On the side was the blue cheese, a chili sauce, and a buffalo sauce.  Each bite could be something different and each bite was something delicious and flavorful.  Let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised.

IMG_1686The egg rolls definitely delivered more than I was expecting, while the burger was right on expectations.  It was well cooked and juicy.  There wasn’t a lot of fuss, which made just a good burger. And it was accompanied by some hand cut sweet potato fries that had the nice crispiness on the outside and a moistness on the inside.

By 9 o’clock we were both full and suddenly the oldest people in the area.  Chairs were being cleared away for what would inevitably become a dance floor; the type of place I would have frequented back in my younger days.  But now, we finished our beers and headed out into the evening.  It was just what we were looking for.  A surprisingly good appetizer, a good burger, and a nice night out.

Final Verdict – 3.5 Stars
